Abstract

Student employees in academic libraries are capable of extraordinary things, but their work is often limited to basic circulation tasks. This presentation addresses how libraries can sustainably provide training experiences to student employees, or other employees new to the workforce, preparing them for more complex tasks. Increasing new employee capabilities frees up staff time for other projects, while providing employees with valuable professional development opportunities. The presenter will speak from her experience of teaching college classes and supervising over 30 student employees at a university library. While this presentation will focus on the specific context of academic libraries, it will engage with broad pedagogical principles, which can apply in any context where adult learners are being trained to do specific tasks.
