Description
Informed by Ignatian vision and Jesuit tradition, this talk outlines an actionable Jesuit framework for responsible AI in education. In being called to serve the common good, this Jesuit approach emphasizes the upholding of values such as equity, inclusivity, privacy, security, sustainability, and transparency, which is strengthened by a call for users, developers and deployers of AI alike to be responsible. AI technologies should foster, not hinder, development of the intellect, character, and spiritual life. AI usage should impart knowledge that is instrumental for cultivating dispositions and capacities for reflective and critical thought, lifelong learning, spiritual growth, ethical discernment, creativity, and innovation, as listed in Gonzaga’s mission. The Jesuit mindset invokes a living tradition that continually adapts to profound challenges of the day. This means that there should be discernment of AI as it pertains to ethical issues and value challenges for each person and as it pertains to social issues and structures in society that create obstacles to justice.
