Abstract
Over the past year, members of the U.S. Air Force have participated in small-group sexual assault prevention training focusing bystander intervention techniques. Although well developed, these programs lack a focus on leadership communication training. This project examines current methods of sexual assault prevention training programs across the United States and provides a communication training curriculum and training aids for Sexual Assault Response Coordinators (SARCs) to use during training sessions focused on educating company grade officers. The project is grounded in the philosophical basis of Jürgen Habermas’ discourse ethics (Griffin, 1994) and the theoretical basis of Gerry Philipsen’s (1992) “Speech Codes Theory.” Through the implementation of specific communication training program aimed at junior leaders, the leaders will have the ability to lead the shift in a negative cultural ideology.
