Abstract

This presentation examines the effects of the language barrier that Hispanic patients face in the United States. This linguistic barrier has manifested into professional malpractice by healthcare workers, poor health outcomes after hospital discharge, and distrust in the US healthcare system. This research was conducted through a literature review about the language barrier throughout the US and real-life situations I witnessed as a nursing student during my clinical experience in Spokane, Washington. In addition, this presentation will offer long-term solutions to better support patients with limited English proficiency and support healthcare equity.
