Abstract

The Surveys of Strength initiative is intended to give our GU students, staff, and faculty the space to express themselves and draw attention to isolating experiences regarding cancer, sexual assault, disability, and immigration. Each section of this collection will begin with a statistical report and then responses to questions that were posed in each survey. These responses should remind us that we are part of a larger community, not only within Gonzaga but within the human race as well.

Personal statement from Grace Applegate

The Surveys of Strength initiative began with the hope of making our community feel connected while dealing with often isolating struggles. Initially, the project was meant to focus on our community’s experiences with cancer, which is close to my heart as my own family has been affected. I wanted to create a collection that might have made them feel less alone. However, as the process began, it became clear that the project needed to expand to include other important topics, such as sexual assault, disability, and immigration. With the help and support of Odalys Sanchez, Sarah Barsky, and Alyssa Johnston-Guzman— all of whom were part of the GSBA DEI team—Surveys of Strength came to life. As I gathered responses, I was continually moved by the vulnerability and resilience of those who participated in the surveys.
