Abstract
Background
Colorectal cancer screening is understood to be the most effective way to prevent colorectal cancer and associated mortality. The U.S. remains below-goal for colorectal cancer screening rates, especially in rural areas.
Purpose
The purpose of this project was to implement and evaluate the use of a colorectal cancer Screening and Tracking Worksheet at a rural primary care clinic in Washington to measure the impact on screening rates.
Methods
The number of patients current with colorectal cancer screening was compared pre- and post-Screening and Tracking Worksheet implementation.
Results
There was statistically significant improvement in colorectal cancer screening rates reported by the clinic in its EHR performance reporting (Uniform Data Systems report), though the exact mechanism of this change is unknown compared to data collected from the Screening and Tracking Worksheet.
Conclusions
Further iterations of this quality improvement project may better characterize reasons for this improvement.
