Abstract

Background: Nursing burnout rates have increased significantly since the Covid-19 pandemic, not only within the United States but throughout the world. As burnout is multifaceted in nature, identifying and addressing the root cause of burnout has been challenging. One approach to remedy burnout effects is by enhancing wellness through daily practice of healthy habits. Purpose: The purpose of this DNP project was to pilot and evaluate the effects of the MINDBODYSTRONG Cognitive Behavioral Skills Building Program on self-rated anxiety, stress, depressive symptoms, and burnout symptoms in a sample population of nurses at a large psychiatric hospital. This program has shown itself to be effective in improving healthy lifestyle behaviors, work satisfaction, and symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. Methods: Pilot of the Ohio State University’s MINDBODYSTRONG program in a sample population of nurses at a large psychiatric hospital. Per MINDBODYSTRONG program requirements, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 2 (GAD-2); the Perceived Stress Scale 4 items (PSS-4); the Single-Item Measure of Burnout (SIB); and the Patient Health Questionnaire 2 (PHQ-2) were administered to participants pre and post program intervention. Analysis: Utilizing Cohen’s d, total pre and post program evaluation metric averages were compared for change. Implications for Practice: Program outcomes will be shared with Utah State Hospital’s leadership recommending that the program be adopted and expanded hospital wide as pilot results demonstrate improvement in nurses’ well-being.
