Description

This roundtable highlights the work of Muslims for Community Action and Support (MCAS) in Spokane, which was founded due to a hate crime targeting the Bosnian Muslim community. MCAS engages in service, public education and community bridge building between the local Muslim community and Spokane. One group MCAS has collaborated extensively with is Bridges Not Walls, a Catholic group that works to build friendship and dialogue with the local Muslim community and to challenge Islamophobia. MCAS was the organizational recipient in 2022 of the Eva Lassman: Take Action Against Hate Award from Gonzaga’s Center for the Study of Hate. Many community groups in Spokane have come together to welcome the new Afghan refugee (“parolee”) community and to provide services. MCAS and other local groups have been proactive not only in providing immediate aid but also in welcoming and preventing prejudice and exclusion as well as offering resources. Global Neighborhood Thrift, for instance, started working with refugees 11 years ago and works to “give opportunities and paychecks to former refugees in Spokane.
