Description
A COMMUNITY GUIDE FOR OPPOSING HATE is, as the name suggests, a new nuts-and-bolts manual for community groups working against hate. Co-published by the Bard Center for the Study of Hate, Western States Center and The Montana Human Rights Network, the 103-page manual details best practices for how to start a local group opposing hate and how to improve the work of organizations already engaged in this effort.
This workshop will be led by two of the authors – Stephen Piggott of Western States Center and Kenneth Stern of the Bard Center for the Study of Hate (joined by Dillon Alexander Methven Cathro, of Western States Center). They will review the manual’s sections on messaging, traditional and social media strategies, and how to work with politicians, schools, and academics. Hate crimes, security, and research, among other topics will also be covered as will the importance of protecting free speech rights while exposing hateful speech and making the hater’s exercise in free speech backfire. They will also review some of the thirteen different hate-related scenarios (with “dos” and “don’ts”), including hate rallies, posters, and threats.
The presentation will be in person, and will require the ability to show the manual on a screen for workshop participants.
