Abstract

Tracy Wascom reviews Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate, a traveling exhibit that refashions books published by a white supremacist group, the Creativity Movement, into art. Books such as The White Man’s Bible and RAHOWA: This Planet is All Ours!, written in the 1980s, were provided to the Montana Human Rights Network by a white supremacist defector. With curator Katie Knight, MHRN then invited artists to repurpose the texts into paintings, sculptures, films, and other artistic investigations of hate. Thirty-eight artists are represented in the current touring exhibit, including Enrique Chagoya, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Jim Riswold, Faith Ringgold, and Clarissa Sligh.
