Hate Studies at Thirty:
Moral Courage in the Work We've Done and the Work Ahead
A special issue of the Journal of Hate Studies
The Journal of Hate Studies, a project of Gonzaga University's Center for the Study of Hate, seeks submissions for our 2027 special issue. Kristine Hoover will serve as guest editor.
Moral Courage in the Work We've Done and the Work Ahead commemorates the 30th anniversary of the founding of the field of hate studies. This special issue honors the work that scholars, activists, practitioners, victims, and others have done to investigate, prevent, combat, and heal from hate while also asking challenging questions about the field's assumptions, failures, and future.
We welcome manuscripts on the themes of moral courage and the history and future of hate studies and especially encourage scholarship that examines:
- • survivors' moral courage
- • the role of moral courage in intervening to stop hate
- • moral courage in exiting hate groups
- • the ethics of studying hate
- • trends in scholarly publishing about hate
- • the impact of changing government funding on hate studies research
- • institutional histories of anti-hate organizations
- • building collaborative networks across academic, civic, and other fields
- • anti-hate interventions
- • the impact of legislation on hate
- • new scholarship on the impact of hate instances that have shaped hate studies
- • pedagogies of hate and the history of teaching about hate
